I had actually forgotten that I had ordered "JournalismNext" by Mark Briggs as a textbook for this class. At any rate, it now officially is the textbook and it is for sale at the Durham Book Exchange, so you should pick one up this week.
For next week, you should read Pages 142 through 176, "Visual Storytelling with Photographs."
The other thing you should do is polish your Soundslides projects. I should mention that there are two Soundslides -- a free one and Soundslides Plus, which is paid. Soundslides Plus is a lot better. If you don't want to pay for it, it is on the machines at the Parker Media Lab in Dimond Library.
Next you will want to publish your project so that others can see it. You know that when you hit the publish button on the software a desktop file is created under whatever tittle you used when you first named your project. You should not dismantle this folder. What you should do is go to the class blog. On the right-hand rail, under the heading "Useful Multimedia Sites," I have added three links to the instructions that you will need to publish your show to your blog. They are the first three items in this section. Following these instructions, you should be able to publish your project to your blog. Please get this done by Friday, Feb. 10, at 5 p.m.
Finally, let's get serious about your projects. As you know, this will be a five-minute production of journalistic quality on a subject of your choice. It will include photos and/or video and audio. You will spend a lot of time working on these so think about a story that is meaningful to you. Think about stories that are best told in multimedia formats. Avoid stories that are not visual or would not lend themselves to audio. Think hard about things like relevance, newsworthiness, and the "So what?" question. This week, I’d like you to explore some ideas and come up with three possibilities. By 5 p.m. Sunday, post the story ideas to your blog with an explanation of why and how they lend themselves to multimedia and why they are journalistically significant. On the web, find a multimedia style that you might emulate and post that link to your blog by Sunday at 5 p.m.
